I know several who will be posting here are avid gardeners, we might as well have a thread.
Today I chatted w Marty B on the phone, of course we talked gardening. Right now we are in the midst of a tree seed swap.
He was telling me about a pumpkin experiment hes doing, and I mentioned sandhill preservation center in Iowa.
Been doing business with these folks for years, and have always been satisfied.

I gots actual window pumpkins growing right now.
I'd put up pic, but I haven't figured out all the knobs, and dials yet.

I knew a guy in co springs who used pumpkins for shade. he built an arbor over his grilling area, then planted pumpkin seeds at each corner, then trained em up, picking fruit off as they grew. Worked great and looked pretty cool.

First time in years that I didn't plant any garlic. Was just too busy this year. Last year had over 1500 bulbs in 12 varieties. Gave all my seed stock to a local guy. He'll keep it going |

garlic is pretty easy here. Just shoved cloves 6-8" apart in the ground around halloween, they come up in spring, harvest when a few leaves are still green. Pretty much the same as shallots. Ill send you some shallots to mess with as well. Shallots can be planted spring or fall, fall is preferable for garlic.
nathan needs to hook us up w some garlic next fall. I let mine go a few years ago and didnt replant.

nathan needs to hook us up w some garlic next fall. I let mine go a few years ago and didnt replant.
I can make that happen. I've grown rocamboles, artichoke, silverskins, porcelains, purple stripes and Asiatics. Only thing I can't really grow here is creole varieties. My absolute favourites are artichoke varieties called Lorz Italian and Transylvania. Where you live makes a huge difference in how the varieties perform |

You can buy that book in hardcopy, I have it here somewhere. that is a rough ass way to farm upper missouri river flood ground. lots of hand work for sure.
There is heaps of dakota flint corn varieties available from sandhill, one ive grown and liked was dakota white. the heirloom pumpkins your after are porbably listed on the site under 'winter squash'. lots of native american varieties listed as well. personally id skip those and go with a european heirloom like 'winter luxury.' or a red kurry type of improved hubbard for eating.
@ nathan, before I lost my collection of garlic like you did, I was growing a german hardneck, a couple of purple polish varieties (long keepers), and an insanely hot poor keeping variety from croatia.
Right now I have yellow dutch (seed) shallots for trading goods, hook me upw some cloves man. Looking for hardy long keeping northern european types.
Ill pay shipping or we can do some trading.

I acquired some "Russian Red" garlic last year. Has some heat to it. Planted some last fall, hoping it fares well this year.
